2014 Conference Update – Bar U Ranch

Enjoy this little preview of the Bar U Ranch from Conference Chair Susan Reckseidler:

The second stop on our trip through the rolling foothills of Southern Alberta will be the Bar U Ranch National Historic Site.

The Bar U Ranch was one of a small group of large corporate ranches in western Canada. Established in 1882, it was one of the foremost ranching operations in Canada. The Ranch later achieved international repute as a centre of breeding excellence for cattle and purebred Percheron horses.

Artists, princes and outlaws have all called the Bar U Ranch home at various times in its colourful history. Famed western artist Charley Russell, H.R.H. Edward Prince of Wales, and Harry Longabaugh (better known as the Sundance Kid) were among the famous and infamous characters who graced the ranch’s vast expanse at various times.

Our afternoon at the Bar U Ranch will include a ranch rodeo demonstration, a chance to explore the living history site, and gather by the round-up camp to hear stories of life on the range. The day will be capped off with a steak dinner and some casual Western entertainment.
